Peripheral Vascular Disease Blockage Beyond the Heart

One of my interestsinterventional cardiologyis also taking care of peripheral vascular disease. So I'm also involvedprocedureswhere we look for significant blockage and other vascular beds, whether it be lower extremities, carotids, abdominal vessels. And a lot of times we can treat those patients as wellwith interventional procedures, balloons, stents. A lot of times we'll see those patientspresent with discomforttheir legs when they're walking. It could be a cramping sensation, just fatigue, tightnesstheir calves sometimes as high as upthe hip or the backside. That's usually a symptom that is associated with narrowing of the blood vessels that supplythe lower extremities. If the symptoms come

on acutely and they occur at rest or if someone'sfoot becomes extremely palecolor and the comfort is very acute those can be emergentsituations where they've developed potentially a clotthe vessel to the leg. But the majorityof patients that we see have the symptoms come out come on over a longer period of timeparticularly with walking. And those are not as acute and actually a lot of times we cantreat those patients with either mediion or we recommend exercise therapy.
